Advice From Sarah... A Fellow Job Seeker

As an individual who graduated two years ago with a higher- level degree and thinking that people would be falling all over themselves to hire me, I’m going to tell you that 300 job applications and a waitressing job later...

Don’t do what I did. Not network.

I thought everyone was kind of full of crap when they said to join professional affiliations, go to networking events held by the alma mater, etc. Now I’m realizing that I was too cocky and shut out those personable opportunities.

Hand deliver your resume to everyone. I took a stack of my resumes to the salon I frequent, I’ve done independent consulting projects to show a testament to my skills and I’m learning how to network properly.

Never turn down an opportunity either. I accepted a job at a collection agency because not only was it an opportunity to be back in the office atmosphere, but it’s just that many more skills I can add to my resume (negotiation!). Everything is temporary anyway, so why not take advantage of new connections? Good luck! I promise it’s going to get better for all of us stars being sucked into the black hole.
